In our catalogue design we developed design parameters with several historical examples in mind, drawing references across eras and beyond the 20th century, like the exhibition does, too.
For the cover of the catalogue on the “Father of Viennese Modernism”, we combined the iconic “I am a Monument” by Denise Scott Brown and Robert Venturi with a drawing of the famous Vienna Post Office Savings Bank building, at the suggestion of curator Sebastian Hackenschmidt. This pointedly illustrated the exhibition concept, which drew multiple references between Otto Wagner and postmodernism.
For selected pages in the catalogue, we commissioned custom illustrations that, printed with green Pantone ink on light green paper, served to mark the text chapters. With a few spectacular full-bleed images, we took advantage of the bilingual text, and made a "double cover" for each chapter introduction, which meant that both the German and English introductions received one half of the same image, with the cinematic effect that only when the page was turned did the double page reveal itself in its entirety.
THE PUBLICATION ACCOMPANYING THE MAK EXHIBITION “POST OTTO WAGNER. FROM THE POSTSPARKASSE TO POSTMODERNISM” LOOKS AT THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN WAGNER AND OTHER PROTAGONISTS OF EARLY MODERNISM AS WELL AS WAGNER'S INFLUENCE ON CONTEMPORARIES, STUDENTS AND SUBSEQUENT GENERATIONS OF ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS.
